Cape Town's commercial radio stations experience increased engagement on Facebook
A recently compiled report on Cape Town's commercial radio stations' social media engagement with their followers on Facebook over the last 28 days makes for good reading, according to consulting agency TaranisCo Advisory.
The agency analysed the Facebook (Meta) profiles of the city's five commercial radio stations and reported that Heart FM leads the log for being the most "liked" broadcaster.
It has around 252 000 "likes or fans" (not followers), with Kfm 94.5 in second place with 237 000, followed by Good Hope FM with 184 000 and Smile 90.4FM, and CapeTalk taking up the fourth and fifth place, having 80 000 and 73 000 respectively.
However, despite having the least amount of "likes or fans" amongst all the commercial radio stations, CapeTalk saw a Page Performance Index of 35% for the last 28 days, KFM 94.5 with 32%, Smile 90.4 with 26%, Good Hope FM with 13%, and Heart FM with the lowest performance of 9%.
CapeTalk once again leads the pack in terms of "Follower Growth" with 0.087%, followed by Smile FM 90.4 with 0.048%, and KFM 94.5 with 0.014%.
On the other hand, Good Hope FM and Heart FM had a negative showing for the period stated with -0.036% and -0.045%, respectively.
Despite having the second least amount of "likes or fans" of all the Cape Town radio stations, Smile FM 90.4 comes out on top in terms of "Post Interaction Rate" with a showing of 0.11%, followed by CapeTalk with 0.066%, KFM 94.5 and Good Hope FM both with 0.062% and Heart FM with 0.046%.
CapeTalk is leading the roost with an average of 36 posts a day, followed by KFM 94.5 with 22, Smile FM 90.4 with 7.1, Good Hope FM with 6.6, and Heart FM with 2.8.
According to Gerrit Davids, Lead at the agency, "Despite being the smallest radio station in terms of 'likes and fans', CapeTalk continues to dominate in engagement metrics, showcasing its ability to connect with its audience on a deeper level."
David says, "Smile FM 90.4 has demonstrated impressive growth in fan interaction and post-engagement, proving its potential as a rising star in the Cape Town radio market."
"While Heart FM faces challenges in terms of fan engagement, its unique programming and niche appeal continue to attract a dedicated online following."
"Good Hope FM and KFM 94.5, despite their large following, face major challenges in fan engagement," said Davids.

Note: A "like or a fan" is not necessarily a follower of a specific page and the amount of "likes or fans" is usually different from that of actual followers. Our report primarily focuses on engagement and not so much on the amount of followers of a specific page.
