Durban
The Summit will convene key stakeholders from South Africa’s sport arena and in particular representatives from municipalities, provincial sport and recreation departments, federations and other sports agencies to engage each other on specific issues relating to sport and recreation facilities as well as development programs respectively.
The intention of the Summit is to firstly, deliver a clear objective on the role of municipalities in the provision of sport facilities and its specific mandate under Strategic Objective No. 9 within the National Sport & Recreation Plan (NSRP). Also, to have discussions on their role with specific reference to the National Facilities Audit, Facilities Plan as well as the application of Norms and Standards respectively. Further, for the Summit to debate and revisit the nuances of Lease Agreements, inclusive of incorporating the Transformation Charter therein as a tool to expedite grassroots transformation.
Secondly, for municipalities and all other stakeholders to have a discussion on the latter’s own development programs and how these could be aligned with available resources as well incorporating it within the broader mandate of sport and recreation of municipalities per se.
The need to have this conversation is also necessitated by the fact that most development programs primarily focus on code specific facilities and there is a definite need to promote a thinking of including their requirements into multi-purpose facilities as opposed to a focus on narrow interests.
We’ve seen at a recent sport facilities forums that stakeholders have their own individual plans and one ponders as to what will happen if all of them had to approach a single municipality with their own and specific facility requirements.
The Summit will also feature a gala-dinner for the inaugural Government Sport Events Awards.
