Sports Indaba to focus on Community Recreation & Mass Participation Programmes
The 7th edition of the Sports Indaba is taking place in Cape Town on 25-27 January 2018 and for the first time it will be attended by both government and non-profit social sports development agencies to jointly debate and develop effective strategies for community recreation and mass participation programmes with a special focus on youth.
The development of community sport is essentially guided by the prescripts of the National Sports & Recreation Plan (NSRP), with the specific focus on the following strategic objectives to assist with broadening the base of sport and recreation in South Africa:
- To improve the health and well being of the nation by providing mass participation opportunities through active recreation.
- To maximise access to sport, recreation and physical education in every school in South Africa.
- To promote participation in sport and recreation by initiating and implementing targeted campaigns.”
The Indaba will have speakers and panellists from various municipalities, social sports development organisations, sports associations, federations and others, deliberating on how best to design community orientated programmes that would speak to the notions of “active recreation, physical activity and targeted mass participation campaigns” as priority areas respectively.
It is also well understood that recreation and mass participation can mainly thrive when an “enabling environment” exists for a community to effectively participate by having access to well equipped facilities. The provision of sports facilities is mainly a municipal mandate but it is always a better proposition where society and even the business sector could contribute towards maintaining a well balanced “enabling environment for recreation and mass participation” The partnership concept for the provision of sports facilities will also be a major point for discussion at the Indaba.
The second day of the Indaba will include visits to some sports facilities around the Western Cape and it will also feature a luncheon where the Sports Development Awards will be handed out to officials who deservedly will be recognised for their unselfish contribution to community sports development. Municipalities are encouraged to nominate people in the various categories of the Awards. To nominate a colleague, send an email to the following address to access the online form: awards@sportsconnect.co.za
The Indaba will end with a Masterclass on Sport & Recreation Programmes on Saturday 27 January 2018, (09h00-13h00).
